  • The truck is expected to use the same body-on-platform as the Borrego.
  • It is unclear if the Tasman will ever be sold in the United States.
  • At least one diesel engine will be offered for the new pickup.

A few weeks after Kia Australia launched an entertaining promotional campaign for its upcoming pickup truck debating what it should be called, it now has a name. It’ll be called the Kia Tasman, as we had long expected.

Last year, the company trademarked the Tasman name, in reference to the Tasman sea that sits between Australia and New Zealand and explorer Abel Tasman who discovered Australia’s island state of Tasmania. It’s a fitting name for a vehicle that will count Australia as one of its most important markets.

Kia says ‘Tasman’ was initially proposed by Kia Australia and chosen from a pool of names sourced from global markets. The Tasman has been “designed with a range of work, trade, and leisure pursuits in mind” and will launch in 2025.

The Korean pickup truck has been conceived as a direct rival to the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max. The mid-size truck is set to adopt a boxy appearance dominated by plenty of straight lines and sharp edges. It will also hit the market with vertical LED daytime running lights similar to those of the Sorento and EV9 while found in the cabin will be utilitarian elements, perfect for a vehicle that aims to conquer the ruggedness of Australia.

It is unclear if the Kia Tasman will be sold in the United States but it seems unlikely unless the brand commits to local production to avoid the 25% Chicken Tax on imported pickups.

While many technical details about the Tasman remain under wraps, Kia Australia has confirmed it will feature a diesel powertrain, likely the brand’s 2.2-liter CRDi four-cylinder mill. It’s possible that a larger 3.0-liter turbo-diesel could be offered.

Kia is also developing a second pickup truck that will be sold in the U.S. This model will be all-electric and should be built on the existing E-GMP platform.
