9-Year-Old Flees Police While Trying To Drive To School

  • A 9-yr-old tried to drive to school but ended up in a short police chase.
  • He even rammed a police cruiser but it’s unclear if it was accidental.
  • The boy somehow managed to make it to school without injuring anyone.

A kid just trying to go to school is now in big trouble after he took his mom’s car and fled from police. And oh, he just happens to be just 9 years old. The chase was short but ended with the tyke backing into the pursuing officer. Thankfully nobody ended up hurt and the kid made it to school in the end.

The whole scene unfolded in Oroville, California around 9:20 am on Wednesday. An officer noticed a grey Volkswagen Jetta stopped at an intersection. When it instructed the driver to move, the vehicle sped away. Police gave chase and only a few blocks later the car stopped in a parking lot near Plumas Ave Elementary.

Then, before officers could make contact with the driver, the Volkswagen went into reverse and hit the police car. It’s unclear whether or not the kid intentionally rammed the cruiser or they simply didn’t know how to securely shift the car back into park. Nevertheless, authorities documented the situation and ultimately got the kid to school.

According to the SFGate, CHP officer Terry Dunn told KCBS-AM it was “one of those no one really believed it, turned out to be a 9-year-old child sticking his head out, saying, ‘I’m trying to get to school.’” The department used the strange situation as an opportunity to highlight safety.

“The fact that this crash involved a child driver only heightens the need for awareness around vehicle security and the importance of imparting road safety knowledge to our younger generation,” the CHP said in a social media post.

A woman purporting to be the child’s grandmother says that the mother of the boy was in the restroom when he took the car. She corroborated the story that the young man was trying to go to class. “And yes to many of you saying he was on a mission to get to school. That’s exactly what he told the officer, “ I’m going to school “,” she said.

It’s great to see a youngster so passionate about learning but someone needs to teach him about driving safety first, and you know, waiting for the right time and all. We get the feeling this is a lesson he won’t soon forget.
